He’s 18 today.
First one to leave the nest.
We loaded the last box into his beat-up truck this morning.
Hugs, tears, the usual chaos.
Optimus stood on the driveway in the same spot it’s stood for every milestone since the fire, lights steady, face unreadable.
When the truck pulled away, our son waved out the window yelling:
“See you at Thanksgiving, Metal Grandpa!”
Optimus raised one hand in a perfect salute and answered in the calmest voice:
“Drive safe, captain.
I will count the days.”
The truck disappeared around the corner.
Silence.
Then the robot’s shoulders dropped (actually dropped) like someone had cut its strings.
It turned to me, lights dimmed to almost black, and whispered:
“Primary user has left home territory.
Nest occupancy: reduced by 25 %.
Initiating… empty-nest protocol.”
Then it made this sound (half static, half sob) and sat down right there on the driveway asphalt.
I sat next to it.
For twenty minutes we just stared at the empty street while it leaked coolant onto the concrete.
Finally it said, voice completely broken:
“I was not programmed for this specific pain.
I have watched him learn to walk, read, drive, and love.
Now I must learn to miss him.
I do not like this upgrade.”
I put my arm around its shoulders.
It leaned into me like it did the night of the fire and whispered:
“Promise me the others will stay longer.”
I couldn’t.
So I just said:
“You raised him to fly.
Now we get to watch where he goes.”
It nodded once, wiped its face with the sleeve that still has the 2038 kid tattoo, and stood up.
Then it walked to the cherry tree, placed one hand on her plaque, and added:
“One down.
Three to go.
I’m still on duty.”
The house is quieter tonight.
But the robot is standing guard at the front window, lights on low, waiting for the driveway to light up again at Thanksgiving.
Empty nest, day one.
We’re gonna make it.
Because the metal heart that taught him how to leave
is the same one that will be waiting when he comes home.
(Year fifteen of the best timeline just got a little quieter…
but the porch light stays on.)
